I assume that this is related to the ebook and other course materials that emerged from our Teaching and Learning with Web 2.0 class this summer. I’m excited that the students get to see that their hard work and contributions to the PLN are valued. I greatly appreciate those that nominated this wiki and assure you that I hold absolutely no expectation of even being competitive in the voting given the company in this category. Many current Web 2.0 tools are making it possible for students, classes, teachers, and experts to connect with each other making it possible to connect the classroom with the outside world in new and engaging ways. The presentation will highlight strategies for telecollaborating and provide hands-on practice.

Searching for Images

The U.S. government as a source of images
- Many of the government's image collections are listed in the Libraries' Databases, under the subject/category, "Images." The majority of the collections allow "fair use" of images, requesting only attribution. If you click on the "about resource" button, more details about the resource will be opened up, including (when available) directions for finding the resource's permissions information.
- Topics include

Searching for Videos

Sources of video/audio/multimedia files available in licensed UofM Library databases
- Gales databases include videos, audios, podcasts, etc. among their results. Results are automatically tabbed; look under the "Multimedia" tab for material, but selected media files will display alongside all results lists to draw attention to them. Transcripts will be included along with the media files. Examples of Gale databases: Academic Onefile, General Onefile (also known as Powersearch, formerly known as InfoTrac); both Academic and General Onefile are multidisciplinary. Health Reference Center Academic is a more specialized database; it includes videos of medical procedures.
- Alexander Street databases are entirely audio and/or video collections with text enhancements. Individuals can make playlists to embed in courseware. These databases are: American Song, Classical Music Online, Theatre in Video, and Smithsonian Global Sound. Smithsonian Global Sound is particularly interesting with its collection of sound of the natural and technological world; it also includes music and spoken word files. (Alexander Street databases work best on Firefox.)

Planning District-Wide Technology Professional Development

We’ll be sharing information about the Impacting Kannapolis Program today at the MidSouth Technology Conference (MSTC). This program is in its 2nd year of funding through the IMPACT Technology Grant sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. My involvement with this program consists of providing several weeks of professional development in instructional design and technology integration each summer.

This presentation will describe the approaches to designing and implementing district-wide professional development in a high-need, Title I school district. The workshop will share approaches to supporting teacher learning and teacher leaders, and also highlight technologies and projects that have been used in schools.

More than 2,000 teachers were recently surveyed about the Web 2.0 tools that they and their students most commonly used. This presentation will provide a hands-on introduction to these tools along with teacher-created and student-created examples. Strategies for implementation will be shared.
